Ford: 1996 Mazda B2300/ Ford Ranger 2.3L pinging, engine shake, sluggish?, mass air flow, vacuum line

Question
Hi I have a 96 Mazda B2300 2.3L Ford engine. The problem I'm haveing is pinging underload any hill at all, when going up hills at highway speeds the engine shakes, pings, and the truck is sluggish?!?!? Bout 160k on truck and is well maintained!

Answer
Hi

Aside from vac leaks and EGR problems, are there any codes?

CEL on?

otherwise try this

1. Unplug the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor electrical connector and see if the engine performs better.

2. If the engine performs better, clean the MAF sensing element and recheck engine performance.

3. If the condition is still present with the MAF unplugged, disconnect the ignition coil pack primary connectors one at a time to see if the engine runs better on one coil pack than the other, suggesting a coil pack failure.

4. Monitor the Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) and Long Term Fuel Trim (LTFT) readings at idle and cruise speeds, looking for a lean running condition.

5. Check fuel pressure. Normal fuel pressure readings will indicate 30-33 PSI at idle and 40 PSI with the vacuum line removed from the pressure regulator.

Let me know what you find.
