Ford: 2003 Ford Focus, solenoid switch, transmission repair shop

Question
Hi - I have a 2003 Ford Focus that has approximately 130,000 miles.  Last year we had a major tune up job done on the car and it usually runs great.  Yesterday when my husband was driving it home from work it stopped running.  It did not die - it just wouldn't go.  He finally put it in low gear and drove home very slowly.  We took it to our mechanic who put it on his diagnostic machine today.  He called to tell us that the computer was showing a problem with the solenoid switch in the transmission, but that he did not work on transmissions and we would need to take it to a transmission repair shop.  Can you tell us what a solenoid switch is and is it necessary to take the car to a transmission shop for this to get fixed?  I know that if we take it to a speciality shop like that, we will be told we need a new transmission whether or not we do.  I would appreciate any help or advice you can give me.  Thank you so much.

Answer
Hello,

well most mechanics and technicians do not repair transmissions anymore, there is simply too much involved and they require  their own repairmen.

The shop I deal with has a great reputation, they have been around forever, stand behind their work and are recommended by most parts shops and others.  Unfortunately, if they say it needs a transmission, they are usually correct, and it may be  better to put a used, one in or sell the car, depending on the circumstances.

Transmissions can cost $2000 + and that is more than tyou can get a comparable car for.

Call your CAA and a few good repair shops and parts suppliers and trust their recommendations.

CAA members are held to high standards, are monitered and have better recourse inf a dispute arises.

A good transmission shop should be able to give you an estimate based on the code and symptom and if they find more problems inside, they should be willing to show you their findings, explain them to you and work with you to find a solution without spending your money without your ok.
