Hyundai Repair: 1997 Hyundia Sonata slow acceleration, hyundia sonata, vacuum leak

Question
Hello,
I'm working on a 1997 Hyundia Sonata with a 4 cylinder. Sometimes it has a rough idle, when you put into drive almost stalls at times. At times when driving (meaning its spiratic) when you accelerate from a dead stop it won't accelerate at all and acts like it has no power. But while it's doing that if you push further on accelerator pedal it will take off like it's supposed to. Any ideas??

Answer
Hi, Shawn.  It's possible you have a misfire, a large vacuum leak, or a break in the air bellows between the air filter and throttle body.

Before I have you check anything, I'm going to ask if your check engine lamp is on.  If so, you may want to check the trouble codes prior to performing the tasks below as these tasks may set false trouble codes.

It's fairly simple to check the bellows-- simply take it off and look it over well.

As for the misfire, if you're not experienced enough to notice the sound, it'll be more difficult to pick out.  Basically what this means is that you're not getting power from one of the cylinders.  Probably the easiest way for you to check this is to, while the engine is running, unplug an injector and reconnect it.  If this results in no change in the way the engine is running, you have a misfire.  Repeat with each injector.  So, for example, if there is no change when injector #2 is unplugged, you know you have a misfire on the #2 cylinder.  Next, you'd need to find the cause.  It could be related to the secondary ignition (plug, wire, coil), the injector, or a mechanical issue in the engine resulting in low compression.
