Ford: 1996 Ford Ranger clutch issue, clutch pedal, odd noises

Question
QUESTION: My son suddenly started having problems with shifting his truck after my younger son was trying to shift it and pushed down on the shifter.  You have to start the truck in first gear and then it will shift while driving but in order to put it in reverse you must turn off the truck, put it in reverse and then start the truck. Then to go back forward you must turn it off, put it in first and start it again.

ANSWER: pull the boot off the shifter, unbolt the 4 bolts, and pull the shifter, see if the white poly bushing have been crushed, you may need to replace them

QUESTION: My husband pulled the boot off, took the 3 bolts out, pulled the shifter out and the bushings looked undamaged.

Is there anything else that might be causing this problem that we could look for at home?

Answer
i have thought about this for a few days and did some research and so i apologise for not replying sooner. is there any change in the clutch pedal? it may have been knocked out of adjustment, but it sounds like you may have something broken in the transmission, i think you might have broken the 1st-2nd gear synchronizer, which helps prevent grinding during the 1-2 shift. how hard did the shifter get shoved in? it may be stuck, can you try pulling it back up? the shifter fork may have slipped off the shift ball inside the transmission does it shift hard? any odd noises when you shift or drive?
