Ford: 97 Ford ranger turn signals not working right., ford ranger, signal lights

I have a 97 Ford Ranger and whenever I apply the brakes the turn signal lights come on and stay lit until i let of the brakes, also, when I have a turn signal on and I apply the brakes, they stop blinking, I don't know much about cars and I have no idea what could be causing this problem...

first thing i would do is to ck the bulbs sound like the filament in the bulb is shorting out. turn on the park lights and make sure the front and rear lights work.then have someone hit the brakes and see if they work. if so let me know and we will go further.
