Ford: 91 exploer, solenoid starter, starter solenoid

Question
Suddenly  will not start.  Checked battery -ok - just replaced before xmas.  No electric (lights/gauges etc).  There is no sound when attempt to turn over.  Any suggestions on the next step of trouble shooting?  Starter?

Answer
Chris, first, take a look at all your fuses that might be labeled "starter solenoid, starter relay, etc."  Ensure that they are all good.  Remember, you are dealing with the starter system, not the charging system, so don't let your buddies talk you into replacing the alternator.  Next, take a test light and find a ground near the starter.  Ground out the light and touch the positive post and see if the light comes on.  (the positive is the one that comes directly from the battery to the starter)  If you are getting electricity, then you have narrowed it a bit.  So far, it is not a fuse, and you are getting "fire" to the starter.  You can swap the starter relay (it will be in the fuse box) with another relay and see if that helps.  Probably not.  After all this, if you still have not got the truck to start, pull off the starter and take it to the parts store.  They can check it for you and tell you if it is good.  If it is good, then the only thing that I can think of is the ignition switch.  However, if you are getting light inside the vehicle (dash, headlights, etc) then it is probably not that.  The last thing that comes to mind is that the engine is not grounded.  Probably not the problem, but there is always that possibility.  I hope this has helped,   Jason
