Ford: cooling fan, coolant tank, coolant system

have 1992 ford escort LX my check coolent light comes on when the engine gets hot. It gets up above normal range and the fan does not turn on. I had the radiator flushed and also replaced thermo-stat.Could it be a cracked head gasget? The fan worked before and it smells hot.

There could be a leak in the coolant system, does the fan come on when the air condition is switched on? if not check the fan resistor and relay. Check the coolant hose pipes and their connections for leak. You have not mentioned if the level of coolant in the coolant tank was found low?
