Ford: Noise from differential, salvage yard, auto parts store

Question
I am having noises come from differential on my 96 Ford Explorer do I need to replace my differential or is there an alternative to getting it fixed the noises sound like scraping noises like from brakes

I would jack it up and make sure that the noise is indeed coming from the  rear end. There is a plug on the rear end that you can take out to see if there is any fluid in it and also check it for leaks. Your rear end should contain 80-90 weight gear oil, so make sure that you have some on hand (available from any auto parts store) before you take the plug out. Chances are, if you hear the noise and you are out of fluid, you will need a rebuilt rear end. Unless you are an above average mechanic with the proper tools, you will not be able to rebuild it and would be better off going to a reputable salvage yard to get a good used one for 600-1000 dollars.
