Ford: Cant get out of Park, brake light switch, sable wagon

Question
Hi again Ragu.  You told me to step on my brake to see if I have brake lights and I don't.  I don't understand your reply of "What is it?" unless you don't see me original question which was the car does not shift out of park when started but you can shift when the key is turned to the first position. Then once in gear you can go through the gears except for park which then locks again.  And when the iginition is turned off the running lights stay on and the battery  needs to be unhooked.

Any ideas? I am at a loss.  Thanks

Something bizarre is happening and being a woman its confused me.

I have a 1998 Sable Wagon with 151000kms.  A while ago I could not shift the car out of Park. Moving the steering wheel, pressing the brake hard, nothing worked. The car started fine. It still doing it, but in fiddling with it I found that if I turned the key to the first position (not the one where the dask lights came on) I could shift the car into Neutral and then into Drive. Would move freely between the gears until put into Park again then it got stuck again. The car still drives good, but now when the car is put back into Park and the ignition turned off the running lights stay on and I have to disconnect the battery.  Any ideas?  I've heard everythign from the tranny going to the brakes switch on the pedal.  Thank you
