Ford: 1997 ranger electrical problems, snow sleet, neg terminal

Question
My trouble is ,my truck wants to start but wont turn over, I turn the key, and somtimes the dash lights up and somtimes it doesnt. When the dash lights up, if I leave the key turn for about a min then try to turn the key the rest of the way it clicks (sounds like old time clock puncher), but wont start, this will happen for about 4 tries ,then It goes back to an everything dead deal. If I turn the heater on full blast and the headlights, then try, I get that click and the starter tries to turn over but sounds like a jackhammer, tring to go. When I can get at least this far then under the glovebox area I get what sound like alarm clock beeping, plus the doorlocks will lock and unlock 3/4 times, til I kill the key. At one point when this happen I was locked in the truck , lol, the doors wouldn't even open by way of the handle. I waited about 10 minutes then tried again then the locks released, but she still wouldnt start.
About a month ago, we had some heavy snow/sleet in our area(NE Mass.). I drove to work, no problem, when I went to lunchit took a couple of tries for the engine to turn over. When it was time to leave the starter wouldn't do anything. So we had it towed home. The next day was much warmer, so my husband went out to look at the truck. He said the neg. terminal was a little corrodid so he said he cleaned all the connections. Then he jumped in the cab and it started right up. He tends to think I got water forzon in the starter gears, and that's why it didn't start.
Could these 2 problems be related?

Any help with this truck would be VERY helpful.

Answer
Mrs Jones from what you  told me it sounds like you have a bad conecton somewere. first thing i would do is replace the battery to eliminate the  chance you may have a shorted cell in the battery then let me. know it is hardly unlikely  that water in the starter could freeze due to when you shout off the vehicle the temp the starter is about 300 to 350 deg.and it would be dryed up before it could frezze.
