When I get to about 70 mph, the engine looses power even when I gear down,  This does not happen all the time.  The overheating warning light has come on once or twice before, so I wonder if there is a cooling problem and the engine is getting to hot to run.  I did notice that the radiator fan is running even after a short 15 min journey and it is only 6-10 degrees outside.
Answer -
roland what i would do first see if your thermastat is working properly  do this after it runs foe 10 to 15 min's feel the rad. hoses make sure that the upper hose is the same temp. as the bottom rember the hoses are hot so be carefull.   let me know

I have removed the rad and flushed it, used a rad flush after and flushed that out, replaced the air filter, which was beyond filthy, think it has not been changed since the van was bought(2002, changed the fuel filter.  Took the van for a test drive, through gears 1 to 4 it accelerates to max revs no problem, but once the van is hot and I pushed it a bit in 5th, the temp light came on thus the engine started to power down.  I am sure that the overheating is the problem.  I checked the rad hoses after & found the top hose was hot as well as across the top of the rad, but the bottom hose was ice cold as well as the bottom of the rad.  The middle of the rad was only warmish.

if that the case then your rad. is cloged even though you flushed it out it doesn't make a difference . it is cloged in the bottom rows.
Question -
I have tested the rad and had a garage test it and it is allowing a good unrestricted flow of water.  Even if some of the bottom rows were blocked, surely this good flow of water would mean that the bottom rad hose would get hot?  The bottom rad hose is cold from the point where the expansion hose joins it, upward of that towards the engine block is hot. Could it be the water pump?

Answer
the easy way of testing the water is to to remove the  heater hose comming out of the water pump and disc. it start the car up if the water flows out at a good rate then i would remove the thermastat and put it in hot water from the micro wave ck the temp when it reaches 195 put the thermastat in and see if it opens up rt away if not threr is  your problem .now if the water doesn't flow out of the hose then you have a bad waterpump.
