Ford: 4/4 touch drive, range button, trans case

Question
I have a1993 Ford Ranger . 4.0 V6, automatic trans
When I push the high range button, if the engine
is warmed up it will go into 4 wheel drive. If the
engine is cold and I push the button I can hear a clicking from behind the instument cluster, but it
won't go into 4 wheel drive.
 Can you tell me where the problem is?

first thing is go under the truck and remove the 4wd ingauge motor and hit the button on the dash when it is cold to see if the motor moves if not then the switch is  probably bad if it does move in all positions then the trans. case is binding you may have to replaces the fluid.if it tuens out that the switch is the problem then let me know and i'll send you a pinpoint test.
