Question -
I have a '99 taurus and just recently I have noticed a "rubbing/grinding" noise coming from the front end of the car.  The odd thing is,  is that the noise occurs when backing up and turning the wheel to the left or right.  The noise begins  after you begin to back up and then turn the wheel. The noise has yet to occur when driving forward and turning the car.  Thank you for your time and any information you can give
Answer -
John,
I can give you some probable causes, but you will need to have it looked at.
1. cv joint bad
2. front bearings bad
3. brakes, caliper, worn.
Thanks

I have one follow up quesion for you.  If the front wheel bearing is bad, is the bearing a pressed unit or pressed bearing and if so do you need a special tool to do so? thank you again

Answer
John,
Before we go any further do you hear a whinning coming from the front of the vehicle while driving around 30 to 40 mph? The bearings can be tapped in with a ballpeen hammer. They should be tapped out easy from the hub assemmby. Let me know about the wheel bearing noise.. Ty
