GM-GMC: tailgate, plastic bezel, wd 40

our 2006 silverado 1500 tailgate won't latch shut unless we slam it very hard or repeatedly very hard.  The tailgate will open ok, just needs slamming, sometimes repeatedly to close. May WD-40 the moving parts I can see at the latch points?

The handle assembly is likely seized or seizing up.  You can try to spray it will some lube but that usually does not work for very long.  I recommend replacing the handle, and you will likely damage the plastic bezel around the handle trying to take it out, they all break.
