GM-GMC: parking brake, acetylene torches, rust ridge

Question
I went to have my 02 Silverado inspected and the parking brake isnt holding. Can they be sdjusted? I dont know how they would wear out just holding the truck in place. Is this a job I should tackle, I have replace disc pads before on my 88, but not the rear. Thanks very much, John.

Answer
The rear braking system on those trucks can be very difficult to work on.  The parking brake is located inside the rotors and builds a rust ridge which can make the rotors very very difficult to get off.  I have had to use acetylene torches to cut rotors off before.  If you are not at mechanically inclined and able to swing a big big hammer to pound the rotors off, you may consider shopping around for the best price on a brake job.  Make sure you tell them the rotors will be difficult so you aren't surprised by a big, 'oh by the way' bill at the end.
Hope this helps
