Land Rover Repair: 98 Disco LSE overheating, coolant system, engine coolant

Question
I drive a 98 Discovery LSE.  Recently, it had begun to make a rattling noise.  Today, after driving to a football game 2 hrs away, the temp gauge all of a sudden goes all the way into the red, and the truck just shuts off.  Coolant is all over the highway.  I had it towed back two hours to my home $$$.  Anyway, any idea what's wrong?

Answer
Hi Christina,

I doubt it's your water pump.  I rarely see this component fail.  More likely its your radiator, thermostat of a blockage within the engine.

Have your radiator and engine coolant system pressure tested to see if there is proper flow.  Have the thermostat also replaced.

Most likely, it's your radiator...about $500 to $700 aftermarket or $1200+ from dealer.

Call local rad shops and ask for estimates.  I had mine done for about $600 tax included.

Best of luck,
