GM-GMC: 1984 Chevy K10 4x4, chevy k10, timing light

Question
I have a Chevy K10 4x4 with a 305. It starts up fine, idles great, runs good in low and 1st gear but as soon as you shift into 2nd or 3rd gear and try to accelerate it cuts out bad. It shuts down, takes off, shuts down, takes off constantly. Than when you stop it idles real slow like it wants to stall. It smells like it might be running a little rich but im not really sure. I just put a new distributor from a junk yard and new plugs on it. Any ideas?

Answer
Sounds like the timing is off.  Is it possible that you installed the distributor one tooth off?  Get a timing light and check your timing.  Also, why did you replace the distributor?  Was it for this same problems, or did the problems start after you replaced it??

Hope this helps
