GM-GMC: Coolant leak in 1999 GMC Diesel Suburban 1/2 Ton, gmc yukon xl, coolant leaks

Question
Is the answer about coolant leaks for a Diesel Suburban manufactured in May
1998 the same as for a newer 2001 GMC Yukon XL 1500? You said the leak is
usually the water pump gasket between the block and pump. I'm assuming the
leak would be the same in gasoline or diesel engine vehicles. Thank you.

Answer
No.  They are completely different designs.  The water pump and housings on the 5.3 and 4.8 V8 gas engines are aluminum, the water pumps on the 6.5 diesels are steel.  It is entirely possible that yours is leaking from the water pump or the gaskets though, not being a diesel tech, I am not familiar with where they commonly leak.  Install a pressure tester, apply pressure and have a look around with a flash light and a mirror.  Hope this helps.
