GM-GMC: 2002 Chevy Prizm Cruise Control, 2002 chevy prizm, cruise control system

Question
Just a few days ago the cruise control completely stopped working on my 2002 Prizm.  I used it to get to work one night, I parked it, and it didn't work for the trip home the next morning.  It was very cold that night... I don't know if that would make a difference.  Anyways, now when I push the button to turn on cruise control, the light does not turn on on the dash.  The cruise control switch do anything.  I don't think its a fuse because there are no other issues with the car. (abs is still functional and I think they are on the same fuse.)  I am wondering if a cable might be loose, but I don't know where to even start looking.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Answer
Assuming you have checked the fuse....
I have pasted the diagnostic chart for cruise control inop for your vehicle.  I don't know your level of expertise but try to work through it, let me knoe if you have any trouble with any of the steps. pay particular attention to steps 4, 5, 6, 7
It is a little vague but I hope this helps

Step 1

Did you review the Cruise Control Description and Operation and perform the necessary inspections?

Go to Step 2
Go to Symptoms - Cruise Control

2
Drive the vehicle above 40 km/h (25 mph).
Depress and release the CRUISE ON OFF button.
Accelerate to the desired speed.
Move the cruise control switch downward to the SET/COAST position and release.
Take your foot off the accelerator pedal.
Does the cruise control system operate normally?
--
if yes Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems
if no Go to Step 3

3
Verify that the following OBD2 DTCs are not present:

   •  P0505

   •  P0758

   •  P0120

   •  P0500

   •  P1780

Are any of the DTC's listed stored in memory?
--
Go to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List
Go to Step 4

4
Turn the ignition switch to LOCK.
Wait 5 seconds.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
If the vehicle has an automatic transaxle, Move the gear shift lever to the drive (D) position.
Move the cruise control switch downward to the SET/COAST position and hold.
Press the CRUISE ON-OFF switch and release.
Does the CRUISE indicator lamp flash twice, pause, and then repeat this sequence?
--
if yes Go to Step 5
if no Go to Step 15

5
Move the cruise control switch upward to the RES/ACC position and hold .

Does the CRUISE indicator lamp flash 3 times, pause, and then repeat this sequence?
--
if yes  Go to Step 6
if no Go to Step 15

6
Pull and release the cruise control switch to the CANCEL position while observing the CRUISE control indicator.

Is the CRUISE indicator lamp OFF when the cruise control switch is pulled to the CANCEL position, and ON when the cruise control switch is released?
--
yes Go to Step 7
No Go to Step 15

7
Press and release the brake pedal while observing the CRUISE indicator lamp.

Is the CRUISE indicator lamp OFF with the brake pedal is pressed, and ON with the brake pedal released?
--
Yes Go to Step 8
no Go to Step 25

8
Does the vehicle have an automatic transaxle?
--
yes Go to Step 9
no Go to Step 10

9
Move the Automatic Transaxle Control Lever to neutral (N), then to drive (D) while observing the CRUISE indicator lamp.

Is the CRUISE indicator lamp ON with the manual selector in drive (D), and OFF in neutral (N)?
--
yes Go to Step 11
no Go to Step 17

10
Press the clutch pedal while observing the CRUISE indicator lamp.

Is the CRUISE indicator lamp OFF when the clutch pedal is pressed and ON when the clutch pedal is released?
--
yes Go to Step 11
no Go to Step 18

11
Turn ignition switch to LOCK.
Wait 5 seconds.
Start the vehicle.
If the vehicle has an automatic transaxle, Move the gear shift lever to the drive (D) position.
Move the cruise control switch downward to the SET/COAST position and hold.
Press the CRUISE ON-OFF switch and release.
Accelerate driving wheels to 40 km/h (25 mph) while observing the CRUISE indicator lamp.
Does the CRUISE indicator lamp flash?
--
yes Go to Step 12
no  Go to Step 21

12
Is vehicle equipped with a 4 speed automatic transaxle?
--
yes Go to Step 13
no Go to Step 14

13
Start engine.
Set the overdrive (OD) switch to the ON position
Accelerate vehicle to 80 km/h (50 mph).
press the cruise control switch to the CRUISE ON-OFF position and set speed to engage cruise control.
Make sure transaxle is in 4th gear (OD).
Press and hold the parking brake release button while pulling up the parking brake gradually (to induce load drag) up to the moment that the transaxle downshifts into 3rd gear.
Immediately release the parking brake and notice a 2 second delay before the transaxle upshifts from 3rd gear into OD.
Did the transaxle delay OD upshift?
--
yes  Go to Step 14
no Go to Step 20

14
Turn OFF the ignition.
Disconnect the cruise control module (CCM) connector and connector C3 of the PCM.
Test the idle signal circuit between the CCM connector and the PCM connector for a short to voltage or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
Did you find and correct the condition?
--
yes  Go to Step 27
no Go to Step 15

15
Disconnect the cruise control switch.
Measure the resistance between terminal 3 and terminal 4 of the cruise control switch with the switch in all 3 positions.
Did the measurements equal the specified values?
    •  CANCEL 0 - 0.5 Ω

   •  RES/ACC 900 - 920 Ω

   •  SET/COAST  220 - 240 Ω
