Question
i hav a 97 chev 6.5l putting in a new short block(u.s military 6.5l) how do i time the injection pump the t chain was installed with a new crank sensor pick up and a new injection pump drive gear the dot on the injection pump drive gear(the one on the cam)is lined up with the dot on the crank.Do i just put the injection pump gear on or does the dot on that gear hav to line upwith someting.dont want to put engine in truck yet if its wrong.

Answer
Jason,

The cam and crank gears time like any other V-8:  The dot on the cam gear is at 6 o'clock and the dot on the crank gear is at 12 o'clock so that the dots "point" at each other.

After setting that up, turn the crankshaft 360 degrees closkwise while facing the engine.  This will bring the dot on the pump drive gear (in front of the cam gear) to 12 o'clock.  At that point, the injection pump driven gear is installed with its dot at 6 o'clcok.  Again the dots "point" at each other and, in this case, are right next to each other because there is no chain.

I believe that fine tuning the injection requires a diagnostic connection, but the above procedue should get the engine running.
