Porsche Repair: Porsche 911 power steering fluid, porsche 911 c2, power steering fluid

Question
I am hearing a little bit of noise when I turn the steering wheel of my 1991 Porsche 911 C2.  I checked the power steering fluid level and it appears to be low.

What kind of fluid to I use to refill?  I know I can buy it from a dealer, however I was wondering if there is something that I can buy from my local auto parts store that will work.

Thnaks for any help you can provide.

Answer
Doug,

Sorry, it's taken a bit to respond to you...the question arrived in a timely manner, but it was categorized in an unfamiliar way...so I got to other things on a higher priority.

Just to remind you, my expertise lies in the older 356 models.  Luckily, many early designs/concepts have lasted since the early 50's and appear in revised forms on 911's, 914's 944's, Boxsters, etc.  Where this happens I'll promise to try to give you the best answer I can.

I can't comment on any power steering fluid that is considered "synthetic".  Now that I've said that, I'm not sure if the 911's use such a product.

I do have a lot of interest and comments on traditional fluids.  If your owner's manual recommends certain fluids, I'd certainly follow those if I knew the product was already in the system.  I think mixing brands and types of fluids is unwise.  So if you're going to top it off, use more of what's there.

What I'd like to have you consider is a fluid that steering gearbox makers and performance upgraders use and recommend.    One of the products that gets high marks is Redline.  I know this product is old locally, and the auto parts houses should also be able to cite comparables for you.  What  I'd like you consider as well is the idea that a complete flushing and refill would be an excellent idea, unless you know when the fluid was changed last.

I hope this information is useful to you.  Good luck with your little C2 rocket.

Dave
