GM-GMC: 95 silverado tranny problem, chevy silverado 4x4, chevy silverado

Question
I have a 1995 chevy silverado 4x4 with auto transmition which will not shift out of first gear. I don't know when the tranny fluid was last replaced. Could this be at least part of the problem? Does this transmition have bands that may need tightening? If so, is it a DIY job or one for a pro? Any help would be great, as I can't drive it but the bank still wants thier money every month. lol. Thanks in advance.

Answer
Low fluid level could cause the problem.  Burned fluid is a symptom of more serious issues.

I believe that your transmission is electronically controlled.  Start by checking the fluid level.  After that, consider a fluid and filter change.  If that does not help, an auto parts store may be able to read a diagnostic code that indicates a sensor failure.

Beyond that, you will need the services of a good transmission shop.
