GM-GMC: Specs on 1990 Chev CK1500 Ext Cab, rear axle ratio, warranty work

Question
Hi Harry,
I just purchased a 1990 Chev CK1500. It is a V8 questionable on the engine size, but I do not know the towing capacity and I am hoping to buy a trailer for camping. How do I find out more about this vehicle, is there  a place to punch in the VIN number?? Thanks in advance

Cliff

Answer
Cliff,

Under the hood on a fender, or maybe in the glove box, is a sticker that lists Regular Production Options (RPO) codes.  This sticker will show what engine, transmission, and rear axle ratio was on the truck when it was built.  Often, it lists the brake system and that will give you the maximum GVW that can be safely stopped by your truck.  Subtract the vehicle's weight from the GVW and you have its towing/cargo capacity.

A dealer's service department can enter the VIN code and obtain a print out of all maintenance and warranty work that was done to the vehicle.  They may also be able to advise you on the towing capacity.
