GM-GMC: found transmission fluid under my van, pan gasket, 2 quarts

Question
Harry:
I have a 1997 conversion van with 140K miles on it.  I use it to pull my boats only, and store it when not in use.
recently, when I pulled the van out, there was what appeared to be red area where the van had been parked, and the engine light was on.  I carefully drove about 1 mile to a service station where I added about 1 1/2 quarts of transmission fluid to the resevoir.
after this, the light went out, and I proceeded to pull my boat [about 4,200 lbs] about 120 miles away, and the van didn't show any signs of problems.
Do I have a transmission problem ready to happen?
I understand that a transmission leak isn't always a big expensive deal.
you can post this message on your GM GMC board

Answer
Jerry,

Red is automatic trsnmission fluid.  You added fluid to a "reservoir"?  If you are speaking about the fill tube to the automatic transmission, the "reservoir" is the transmission pan.  If not, I do not understand your question.

Leaks can occur at the following points on an automatic transmission:  The transmission pan gasket, fill tube o-ring, modulator valve o-ring (if so equipped), and front and rear seals.  The oil pan gasket is usually the culprit, particularly if the leak occurs when the vehicle sits.

You should have the vehicle checked and the leak corrected.  Your transmission is probably fine, but if the fluid level gets too low while driving it the fluid will overheat and/or the vehicle may stop and not move until the missing fluid is replaced.
