GM-GMC: Steering wheel reassembly, retaining ring, lock cylinder

Question
I picked up a good steering column to replace the one which was giving me problems in my 85 GMC S-15. Replaced the ignition switch and upon reassembly I have not been able to press the steering plate back into position with the tool. I was wondering if I would have better luck if I tried after mounting the column. If you have any advice it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Answer
If it was the ignition switch that was replaced there should not have been any reason to remove the steering wheel.

If you are describing the lock cylinder, or components in the top of the column, the steering column needs to be securely held while attempting to compress the spring in order to reinstall the retaining ring.

Check the top bearing of the steering column and make sure that the race is going back in properly.  A problem here will keep the spring from compressing properly and make installing the retaining ring impossible.
