GM-GMC: Fuel pressure, gm vehicles, regulator valve

Question
Thank You for your quick response to my last question.  Again, I have a 1987 Chevy S-10 pick-up 2.8L V6.
The Fuel pump is producing pressure well below normal.  Will a new fuel pump most likely solve the problem?  What may be other causes for this problem and suggested course of action?

Thank You again,
Scott Park

Answer
Have you checked and/or replaced the inline fuel filter?

If the filter is partially plugged, the fuel flow coming out of it will be reduced and the pressure will be low.  The filter is a stainless steel canister with threaded fittings for inlet and outlet.  It is usually under the vehicle between the fuel tank and engine, though some GM vehicles have the filter inder the hood.

If the filter is okay, there is a pressure regulator valve on V-6 engines that could be defective.  It should be tested before replacing the fuel pump.

After the above checks have been accomplished and ruled out, the problem would likely be the fuel pump.  It is in the tank and requires removal of the tank to remove and replace it.
