Question - hydraulic lifters (350 engine with 4 brl. carb)
I have a '74 pick-up truck that makes a clickin' noise from the valves. we changed heads they were rebuild by a "pro".
They told me that maybe needed adjustment.
Could you tell me how to adjust 'em?

         Thanks a lot!

Since you did NOT specify what engine you have in the vehicle an answer I cannot give you. Are the lifters SOLIDS or HYDRAULIC ?.

Answer
1. Get the engine to normal operating temp.

2. Remove BOTH valve covers.

3. Either put a new gasket on the head so as the oil does not leak out onto the exhaust manifold or use some rags or other suitable material.

4. Loosen each rocker arm NUT until you hear the rocker arm CLATTERING (making a clicking noise).

5. Tighten the NUT only enough until the noise STOPS.

6. Turn the NUT down (tighten) 1/4 turn and wait until the engine smooths out.

7. Again turn the NUT down (tighten) 1/4 turn and wait until the engine smooths out.

8. Again turn the NUT down (tighten) 1/4 turn and wait until the engine smooths out.

9. Again turn the NUT down (tighten) 1/4 turn and wait until the engine smooths out.

Once this is done, You have turned the NUT (tightened) EACH rocker arm nut on all 16 valves 1/4 turn each time as said above in steps 6,7,8 and 9.

Therefore you have turned the NUT ONE full turn, as 1/4 times 4 equals 1 full turn.

In conclusion you have turned the NUT one complete 360 degree turn from the initial point of where you stated to tighten the NUT until the noise (Clattering) was gone.
