GM-GMC: Power steering noise, pitman arm, pressure hoses

Question
I replaced my power steering unit on my 1997 Chevy 2500 cargo van.
I put two that were the rebuild kits in and it still made the noise I figure I messed up when I put the kit in. So I got a nice almost new pump from the savage yard. Put it in and it was nice and quiet but then the noise came back. This truck has the brakes being assisted buy the power steering pump. I did get the air out of the pump by turning the wheels. Any suggestions.

Answer
The steering system you have is called Hydro-Boost and my diesels have the same system.  Mine are quiet, even after replacing various parts on them due to leaks.
A hissing sound is normal on these vehicles.
My 1984 shop manual offers the following noise and cures:
Chirp or squeal is a drive belt problem.
Rattle is caused by pressure hoses touching other parts.
Gear noise (rattle or chuckle) is caused by improper steering box adjustment, loose Pitman arm, or losse steering box to frame bolts.  May also be caused by worn parts such as the connection between the steering box and steering column.
Groan is low oil level, air in the oil, or a poor pressure hose connection.
Growl is a restriction in the system caused by a bad hose.
The rest of the chart deals with noises caused by internal pump problems and your replacement of the pump should rule those out.
There is no way for anyone else to know what the noise is in these kinds of forums because they cannot be heard.
