GM-GMC: Master and slave cylinder, hydraulic clutch, clutch pedal

Question
on a 1978 chev s10 pickup. All at once it would not shift gears. You can shift gears if the truck is not running, but if you start it, it takes off. The clutch does not disengage the the gears. Could this be a bad slave cylinder maybe. The clutch and pressure plate and throwout bearing is less than a year old.
Also should the slave and master cyl.be replaced at the same time?
Thanks

Answer
I believe that you have a 1987 S-10.

The problem can be anything from low fluid to a bad slave cylinder and/or master cylinder on the hydraulic clutch.  It may also be caused by loose or missing parts at the slave cylinder, throwout bearing fork, and/or pivot.

How does the clutch pedal feel?  Is there any resistance when the pedal is depressed?  If not, there may not be enough fluid in the system or the master/slave cylinder may be bad.

It is not necessary to replace the master and slave cylinder at the same time.  If one of them is leaking, replace or rebuild it.  The hydraulic system will have to be bled afterwards, just like bleeding the brakes to get rid of air in the system.
