GM-GMC: after market steering colunms, fatman fab, chevy small block

Question
Harry,
I have a 1949 3/4 ton GMC. I am installing a chevy small block 350 w\auto tranny ,Dakota digital gauges, and a Mustang II front end from Fatman Fab. and I want to install a tilt/shift/blinker steering column wihtout the shift indicator. How do I know how long a steering coulumn to buy? Where & what do I measure? Thank you for your time, Dave.

Answer
Dave,

I have never undertaken such a project.
I would suggest that the measurement that is most important is the length from the firewall to the point where you want the steering wheel to be.  There may be several options for that measurement and the best reference would be the old steering column.
I suspect that the length from the firewall to the steering box is a standard measurement, based on the chassis being used.  Since you have a 1949 GMC, that measurement may not be in the catalogs of steering column suppliers, so you will again need to measure from the firewall to the steering box input shaft.  With the two mesurements, you should be able to find a column that meets your needs.
