I have a 96 chevy 1ton 454. my question is should the alernator be almost to hot to touch and if it is going out could to make a clicking nosie like a lifter. Thanks John

John,

It sounds like the bearing(either frt or back) are going on your alternator. They may be hot to the touch usually just because the heat of the engine, but really excessive heat and noise are usually a mecanical failure. Basicly any noise out of that alternator is a bad thing. Having it tested may actually show it still charges OK but eventually the worn bearings will let the shaft ride to one side witch will take out the brushes and that will be it for the alternator! hope this helps.

Any up/down side/side play is bad, if it will slighty move forward/backward can sometimes be OK. As for Alternator output.....Thats at least a 65-100 amp alternator and are usually tested under load condition something you cannot duplicate with a regular Voltmeter. I good test is to simply hook the voltmeter black to (-)Batt. and red to (+)Batt. then start-up the truck the Voltage should be above 14V while running and about 12.5V when not. Try turning on all your accessories, Lights A/C etc... and see if the voltage drops below 14V while running, this would be an indicator that the alternator can't keep up with the load you are putting on the system. Hope this helps!
