Mercedes: 2000 SL 500, gasket seal, road grime

Question
The SL has a water leak into each door. The water marks appear on the lower speaker grills located at the bottom front of the door panels.  I don't know if it occurs with the hardtop is on the car because I don't drive it in the winter when the hardtop is on.It certainly happens with the soft top.  It leaks when it is sitting or being driven in the rain. It does not look like water is accumulating in the bottom of the door and working its way up.  It looks more like it has run down the inside of the door.  It also seems like I get more water in when the car sits rather than moving but I can's swear to it. Can you offer suggestions?  I don't know if it is a gasket/seal around the front of the windshield, roof or pillar or seals around the door.
Thanks for your help.
You are all great and thanks for this website.

Answer
Tom,
The window depends on the gasket to keep it in position. When the hard top is in place, it gets enough support to keep it against the exterior wiper gasket at the bottom of the glass along the door edge. I suspect that when the soft top is on the door gasket frame above is not keeping the glass in the proper vertical position. Because the glass has no support when raised and lowered with the top down, the regulator frame track can become worn and or loose.
Also, with age, UV exposure, and road grime, the wiper gasket can become hardened and not seal against the glass properly.
I suggest that you have an assistant take the water hose and spray a good stream along that seal while you sit inside the vehicle and determine if you get water along the inside panel or from some umknown location.
Good Luck let us know how it turns out.
