Mercedes: Gas Light, independent mechanic, battery terminals

Question
I just filled the gas tank on a Mercedes 1998 C230. Several hours later when I restarted the vehicle the low gas light came on? What is the problem and is it easy to fix?

Answer
Richard,
What is the needle reading. Does it read full?
I suspect that the sensor float has stuck if you were low to empty when you began to fuel.
It may dislodge on its own. Just keep your mileage and refuel before you get before 1/8.
You could also try resetting the computer, but turning of all accessories and the ignition.
Remove the battery terminals (-)first then (+). Wait 30 minutes and re attach in reverse order.
If the computer is involved this may allow it to come back on line properly.
If all this fails, I would suggest a independent mechanic. If the sending unit has gone bad, then you will need to have it replaced.
Good Luck
