Mercedes: 1984 300TD, tie rod ends, steering box

Question
steering wheel has play in it--what is the probable problem--is this a big deal to get it fixed--if you can estimate the appox cost-- Engine and other systems are in good shape--250,000 miles

Answer
William,
Over time all the joints tend to ware. The play can be in the steering box at one or two other joints. The box may have an adjustment to help remove the play.
If you vehicle the vehicle and place it on jack stands, you may be able to to see which joints are loose.

Worn tie rod ends or idler joints can create such play. The steering box may be worn. Have a helper rock the steering wheel while you hold the front wheel strait. If the wheel can be rotated back and thru without too much motiona the steering box needs adjusting.
The box may have an adjustment on top.
If the play is in the box, let me know and we can talk about adjustment.
Good Luck
Rob
