my mercedes was working until one day i tried to start it and it wouldnt, but the lights and my radiater fan turns on. whats wrong with it?

Year and model Mercedes. Number of miles.
Type engine: Gas or Diesel
Does the starter rotate the engine.
If the engine rotates, have you verified that you have fuel.
Have you checked to see if  you have spark to the plugs?
Is there any indication that the car is trying to fire?
