Mercedes: 1994 190D starter, vacuum leak, dangerous safety

Question
My starter went out on my Merz 190D.  I replaced it but after the car starts and I turn it off.  It will not stop running.  I have to unhock the battery and plug a vacume line to stop it.  It did not do it till I put the starter in.  Any ideas what i did wrong.  I really don't want to take it out.  It was a pain to put in.

Answer
Answer:
Why do you not use the STOP lever?

190D Won't turn off and no Stop Lever!

You have a vacuum leak, a broken or disconnected line is most likely.

Disconnecting the battery with the engine running can wreck your voltage regulator and alternator, and be dangerous.
