Mercedes: is newer better?, station wagons, diesel owners

Hello!

I used to have a 1984 300DT, which was still running fine at
365,000 miles.  I moved & had to sell it -- I miss it terribly.  It
was so much fun to work on!

We're looking at station wagons and were wondering if the late
90s MB wagons are worth the MB cost.  Do you know if they've
been plagued with troubles, or are they as reliable & easy-to-fix
as the W123?

Any suggestions on what to look for/avoid?
