Mercedes: 420 SEL fuel problem, fuel tank cap, vent valve

Question
My 87 420 SEL is not getting fuel. What steps / tests can I perform to narrow the cause down further (ie filter, pump etc). The plugs are sparking so I am pretty sure it is the fuel system since starter fluid produced ignition for a second or two.

The car ran a few times for about 2 minutes  but then would stall. It would restart about 2 hours later. Last time this happened, I heard a 'banging' noise near the fuel tank and it has not started since. The fuel tank is about 1/4 full.

Is there a fuse for the pump? I did not see one labeled so in the fuse box. Is there any way to test the pump either on or off the vehicle?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
Best guess:
There are only few things near the fuel tank/fuel system area that can make sound.
#1. Fuel system pulled a vacuum, and the tank is now collapsed in vacuum.
#2. Fuel Accumulator failed.
#3. Fuel Pump failed.
#4. Fuel Pump Check Valve failed.
#5. Fuel Tank Cap Seal failed under vacuum/pressure
#6. Fuel Tank Vent Valve failed = sealed tank.

If your fuses are over five years old, trash them, and replace with NEW.
