Mercedes: fuel pump relay/fuel pump, mercedes benz 190e, fuel pump relay

Question
i have an 84 190e 2.3 the engine isnt getting fuel. where is the fuel pump relay? none of the relays that i have found are marked fuel pump, and a diagram in a book shows what appears to be an "optional" fuel pump relay, and there is nothing in that location in my car. also the parts counter people i have asked said there isnt a relay for that car. it has to have some relay, right? the positive wire to the pump isnt "hot" with the igntion in the on position. does the starter have to be cranked over to get juice to the pump? any help appreciated!
