Hey, I have a 96 Mitsubishi Eclipse Gs, 5 speed...When im on the highway and im in 5th gear, it seems like when the car gets up to 80 it redlines and i cant go any faster...is this right? I dont know why my car would only get up to a max of 80 mph...please help...O and i had a diagnostic test done at Autozone when my service light came on and the code P1294 popped up and i was wondering if you knew what that meant...Any help would be greaaaaaaaaat...Thanks
-----Answer-----
You are not in 5th, you are in third. Likely an issue with bad bushings in the shifter assembly. Located on the side of the transmission.

P1294 is the IAC motor. (Idle Air Control Motor) This could be because you are over-revving the engine, a short in the harness or just a bad IAC motor. You want to inspect all the wiring under the hood and check all your fuses. Then, disconnect both battery cables and hold them together for about 20 seconds. Reconnect and see if it helps. This resets the computer and that code.

Ok thanks for your help...I just dont get how I would be in third if i shifted from 4th to 5th...if i shifted from 4th to third goin at that rate of speed, wouldnt my car down shift buck forward and all that?

Answer
What rate of speed? You mentioned that your tached out at 80? If you were tached out in 5th in that car you would be doing 115 or better. Which could also mean you have a broken shift fork in the transmission and it is not leaving 4th on the upshift. But then, it could be someone overhauled that transmission and installed the wrong differential.
