Mitsubishi: My wheel is shaking at highway speeds, mitsubishi galant, wheel bearings

Question
Hey Dinger,

I just wanted to let you know that it is my steering wheel that is shaking not my tires.  I had to clear that up with you so that you will be able to give me a more precise answer.  I answered your follow-up in another email.

Hi Dinger, its me again London.  Something is always happening to my baby.  Once again I have a 2001 mitsubishi galant 4-cylinder.  When I drive at the speed of 55 mph or higher my wheel begins to shake?  What could it be?  I thought it was the alignment but i was told that it could be my tires or brake system.

Answer -
Hi again London,

Nice, but sorry to hear from you again... LOL I definitely would have the balance check on the tires first. But this could also be a bushing problem like lower control arms or ball joints. This could be very dangerous, so please have this looked at right away. Not likely brakes unless you feel it with the brake on, but if it mellows out when holding the brake padel on, it's likely bushings.

Hey London,

What did that turn out to be?

Answer
HI London,

Something is causing the steering wheel to shake. So if we work our way down from the steering column it is attached to the steering rack, which in turn is connected to the front end (i.e. upper and lower cotrol arms, brake system, hub assemblies, upper control arms, ball joints, wheel bearings, power steering pump, drive axles, etc...) and finally the tires. There are a number of bushings in there that wear with time. Bushings would also cause the car to pull and cause uneven tread wear. I feel it's in the tires. Sometimes, in the summer heat, you can develope a "blister" in a tire and this would cause it. More likely though, it's just the balance of the front wheels. Have your tires balanced and rotated. See if that doesn't fix it.
