Mitsubishi: car cut off, auto zone, warning lights

Question
hey! i took it to cottman. thanks 4 the tip...unfortunately, they were not able to find anything when they used the hand-held thingy. he asked me to bring it back so they could do a more detailed trouble-shoot, but you know what? it just stopped acting like it was goin to cut off...i remember filling the tank up a couple days ago, right after that, i noticed the car was driving just a bit rough, so, i dont know what it could have been? thank you for your help. you did a great job! you certainly know more than i do ;)

i have a 1999 mitshubishi diamante, v-6-no warning lights were on when it cut the the first couple of times. about a month ago, i had to get a jump from someone. after i got the jump. i took it to an auto zone to have the battery checked (the battery had quite a bit of corrosion on the "red cap"). they told me the battery was okay, but here lately, ive had to get two "jumps" in two days! last night, all the warning lights came on right before it cut off in the drive thru. i got a jump from someone and drove home, but while i was driving it, it still acted like it was going to cut off. at the stop lights, i would put the car in park, rev the engine, and put in back in drive once the light changed...i made it home! any idea what this could be? thanks.

Hi Dee,

Looks like a bad alternator. To verify this, get your car started and disconnect the positive side of the battery. If the car continues to run, it's a bad battery. If it dies, have your alternator replaced. Easy stuff! LOL Thanks

Ok Dee,

Now that we have it running take it to a shop that can scan your car for diagnostic trouble codes. A Cottman Transmission will do this for free. I suspect that it will be a bad MAF sensor, but we need to have it scanned before we go throwing parts at it! Easy stuff!

Answer
Hi again Dee,

Well, darn, I was hoping to get a code, but then again, you may have gotten bad gas. There are gas stations that sell fairly cheap gas called m-80 or something like that that is causing a lot of problems with a lot of cars. Try a couple of tanks of Shell premium. I know, $3.29 a gallon here , but it might clean out your cars fuel delivery system and then go back to mid-grade. Shell has a very strong cleaning additive in their premium. Keep me posted, possible too that the guy cleared any codes that were present and that reset the computer until a sensor sees a problem. Hopefully, the fuel is the issue... Thank you for using AE. I'm here for you so let me know if you need anything else. And have a great weekend!
