Mitsubishi: Mitubishi Colt 1993 Fuse problem, window moldings, gum wrapper

Question
Hi There,

I really hope you can help!  Yesterday, after washing my car (first time in a while!) I noticed some bizzare electrical failures.  The central locking decided to pack in (0ne door at a time, first the drivers door failed to work on central locking, whilst the passenger side worked fine, then both doors stopped working).  When driving I noticed that the clock was no longer showing, nor the radio for that matter and whenever I went round a left hand corner, the power steering stopped responding and the engine sometimes cut out, causing me to have to start the engine again.  All the lights work fine as does the dash-board lights so its not a complete electrical failure!  Ive looked at the fuses and a couple are blown but everytime I replace one, it blows that as well!  Could it be an earth somewhere or perhaps a problem caused by water from washing it?  I have no idea where the earths are so any help you could offer would be much appreciated.  Its a 1993 Colt, 1.6l 3 door hatchback.

Answer
Hi Michael,

Appearently, you have water where it shouldn't be. Of course, that could be a lot of different places for sure. I suggest you leave the hood up and let nature do it's thing to dry out all the connections. Might take a couple of days. Water could have gotten down inside the door through bad or worn window moldings and is causing a short. Be patient, it will dry and you'll be ok. Don't force anything like a gum wrapper on the fuse because you cause some serious problems.
