Mitsubishi: 0 rpm = dead 1999 mitsubishi mirage, mitsubishi mirage, hp i4

Question
Hi, my car is a 1999 Mitsubishi Mirage DE sedan. I believe the engine is 1.5L 92 hp I4.  Recently (like the past week), I've had my battery replaced, and with this minor repaire, I notice that at every stop my car makes (at say a red light or stop sign), the car dies.  So, I have to turn the key in the ignition in order to turn it back on...

So, basically, as long as I don't come to a complete stop, the car will continue to run.  In addition to this problem, when my car does die, it tends to shake slightly...(this question seems similar to others, sorry).

Thank you for your help; I appreciate it.

Answer
Good Morning Jessica,

The problem is a stuck or faulty torque converter solenoid in the transmission's valve body. Likely there is a check engine light on also. This problem also probably happens more when the car is warmed up. What happens is this: Your car is equipt with a torque converter in the transmission that has a set of lock-up clutchs. When your car goes fast enough to achieve lock-up usually 45 mph or so, the solenoid or the valve that controls lock-up is sticking on. So when your slowing to a stop, it's not coming out of lock-up so your engine and transmission are locked together. As you stop it's like a manual transmission if you didn't push in the clutch pedal while in gear. See a Cottman Transmission shop near you. The repair should be under $300. Possibly much less. Hope this helps.
