Oldsmobile/Buick: Antifreeze Smell AFTER Heater Core Replacement, oldsmobile delta 88, heater core replacement

Question
Hi,
I have a 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88, with 183,500 miles on it.  The heater core died two weeks ago, and I had it replaced by a reliable mechanic.  Before the core went out, there was a faint antifreeze smell for about a month.  When it finally blew, a mist of antifreeze filled the car and the carpet got wet.  Now that the core has been replaced, there is no smell from the vents until I've been driving for about 10 minutes.  Then I get a strong antifreeze smell that comes and goes randomly.  It happens any time the fan is running--doesn't seem to matter whether I have the A/C, heater, defrost or vent on.  Sometimes the windows start to fog up, then clear again after a few minutes.  I took the car back to the mechanic, who checked and said there are no leaks in the core or anywhere in the cooling system.  He thinks there may be some antifreeze residue in the air ducts, but that should have evaporated out by now.  I've been blasting the heater, trying to speed up evaporation, but it doesn't seem to help.  Any ideas?  Can I get to the ducts myself to clean them out?
Thanks,

Answer
Tom ,

I know for a fact that GM dealers sell disinfectant just for this purpose .Also depending on what auto stores you have in your area , most carry disinfectants as well. Rule of thumb the evaporator is inside the car and condenser is outside .

I had the same problem with my 83 Olds . Make absolutely sure that you have the radiator fluid cleaned up off the carpet because you may be smelling that .

It might be pricey but most dealers offer duct cleaning/disinfecting solutions .

You can get to the ducts but it will require some disassembly of the dash and other related parts . Once you have the bezels off its pretty cut and dry . You'll be able to see the evaperator and all connecting ducts .

Tom I hope this helps . If you have any more questions or just want to post a followup please feel free . Don't forget to rate my response to you .
