Oldsmobile/Buick: rust/paint, oldsmobile cutlass ciera, 3m glue

Question
hey, i just got a 85 oldsmobile cutlass ciera sedan and i want to repaint it. There is a small amount of rust by the wheels and the bottom of the doors, and i was wondering if there is any way i could sand it down or something to stop it from spreading. Also, there carpeting type of stuff on the ceiling inside is falling down and i was wondering if i could use a staple gun or something to staple it up so it willnot fall down. I would like to paint the car and was wondering if you had any idea of how much it would cost for me to paint the whole car. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Answer
Chris ,

About time I got a question about a G-Body =) Everything you are doing to your car , I have done on mine .

The interior headliner is a very delicate task. I would not advise using a staple gun because it looks tacky and the other side of the styrofoam will most likely break. Your whole headliner is one giant piece that can be removed by taking off all the "crown moulding" around the edges . Once you have done this remove the cloth off the board spray some good 3M glue and tack it back on . If the liner itself id trashed you can always go and buy another material and repeat . I have found out that certain glues do not hold and will fall down with weather changes , so thats your choice .

Prices do vary as to what type of paint job you want . I cannot give you any solid answer but my estimate was $300. To fix those rust spots and save your self alot of money prep them by wet sanding .Remember Chris your doors are extremely heavy (75 pounds) and are most of the time  riddled with problems . Rusting on the bottoms can lead to pieces of the door simply falling off . Dealing with it ASAP is something I highly recommend. Below I have listed a canadian site that lists some ideas on prepping before sending to the garage.  Getting all the minor body work done before sanding can save you hundreads of dollars!
