Auto Parts: 1989 BMW 318i Touring, bmw 318i touring, auto parts dealer

Question
Does anybody out there know where I can find parts (spark plugs, oil filter, fuel filter, oxygen sensor, air filter) for a 1989 BMW 318i?  I own one of these (really I do), but it's as if the vehicle does not exist in ANY catalog.  Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Gene,

I'll give you the heads-up as to why you can't find parts for your '89 318i. BMW only imported the 318i in 84 and 85. Then they skipped all the years up until 1991 because the vehicle did not sell like they had expected and therefore ceased importing them. Your vehicle is what we refer to as a 'gray-market' specimen. Your vehicle was imported into the states by a third-party exotic vehicle importer or by a military person who was stationed in Europe.

Unfortunately, since those vehicles were not produced or sold in the USA, you will find no support for them here. You must find a source in Europe for specification information on that particular vehicle. Sorry.

My advice on the tune-up items would be to remove them and get the part number and see if you can match something up at your local new auto parts dealer like NAPA, Advance Auto, AutoZone, etc. Spark plugs, oil filters, air filters and fuel filters should be marked with interchange part numbers. The O2 sensor may be the impossible-to-find item in that bunch.

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
