Question -
How do I replace the oil filter?
Answer -
What engine do you have?
3400 SFI (6cyl)
Answer -
You unscrew it.
Oh, so if I had a different engine I wouldn't have to unscrew it? No, seriously when my son and I tried to change the oil for the first time, we "unscrewed" the filter and realized that it was too large to get out thru the top.... and too large to pull it throught the bottom. There's a fuel line (small tube) that you can push on to create a little additional space but still didn't want to pass thru. My son eventually forced it thru the opening at the bottom. Is there an easier way to get this out the next time? We changed our Lumina and Acura with no problems. Thanks

Answer
Well, for your information, one of the engines in the Grand AM has a filter that doesn't spin on. There is a cap that you have to remove and then the filter just drops in.
OK, now on to your question.
There is a plastic splash shield on the bottom of the car, to the front of the engine cradle. It is held on with two wingnuts. Remove the shield and there is plenty of room to get the filter out.
