Saab: 1997 Saab 900 starting issue, digital voltmeter, saab 900

Question
97 Saab 900 will start for three days then hard start and may need to be jumped.  New alternator new starter in last six months.  Does crank and takes ten times to start

Answer
Brian:
The symptoms are clearly those of a non functioning charging system. Its possible that the "new" alternator is defective OR there is a fault in the wiring somewhere. If so inclined, you can check the system yourself as follows:  With a digital voltmeter, you should get at least 13.8 volts across the battery with the engine running. Alternatively, you can buy a simple charging system tester. Both of these are available at <www.harborfreighttools.com> for less than $10.00. The voltmeter is part # 98099 and the charging system tester is part # 66892.
You can either use mailorder or go to a local branch of the chain.
