Saab: no start, neutral safety switch, time one

Question
We bought a second hand SAAB 9-3, 2001.  Runs beautifully.
But, now and again, it won't turn over.  All the lights come on, check engine is fine, but nothing happens when I turn the key.  This is the third time.  One thing we did in the past two times, as suggested by AAA, was to lock it manually, wait 5 minutes, and unlock manually and then, magically, it turned over.  Today, this did not work.  I am taking it in to the dealer tomorrow to get it fixed, but he thinks he might change the starter...and I suspect it is NOT the starter, but something else.  As this is my only car, and I have had to take a taxi home twice now, I'd like to go to mechanic prepared to ask him/her to check out whatever you might suggest.  Thank you, Barbara Sydney

Answer
Barbara:
When you try to start the car unsucessfully, do you at least hear a "click" when putting the key in start position? If so, its most likely the starter. If not, then, as you suspect, it could be something else, such as the "neutral safety switch" (only on automatics).
